Year 5 pupils prove age is no barrier in Bath maths competition

Pupils from Weston All Saints Church of England Primary School in Bath have shown that age is no barrier after competing against secondary school students in the Junior Maths Challenge in the city.

The Year 5 students, aged just 9 and 10, took part in the hour-long multiple choice exam at Oldfield School, designed to test problem-solving, logic and mathematical thinking.

The team of pupils Thea, Seth, Jude, Owen and Louis competed against older Year 7 and Year 8 students from secondary schools across Bath and North East Somerset.

Thea said:

“I had a really fun day and it was great to do some really challenging maths!”

Jon-Paul Beaumont, Year 4 teacher and co-maths lead at the school said:

“I am very impressed and proud of our group of Year 5 students who competed against students three years above them. The questions were so difficult but our children were so determined and up for the challenge!”
